Do Invisible Braces Work?

Do Invisible Braces Work?

Mar 01, 2021

Invisible braces are relatively new, having been around for a couple of decades now. But, some people are still skeptical about their effectiveness as orthodontic treatment. Probably because most of us either wore traditional braces or saw a loved one wearing them. And, these traditional braces took a long time to correct malocclusion and reposition the teeth.

The idea that clear, removable braces can reposition the teeth just as effectively as the traditional braces, is difficult to believe. Most dentists are recommending these invisible aligners to correct some of the orthodontic problems. But, do invisible teeth braces work to straighten teeth?

What are Invisible Braces?

Invisible braces or clear aligners are orthodontic devices that are transparent, plastic-made dental braces used to gradually move the teeth. These aligners are customized to fit your precise teeth and dental structure. Unlike the traditional braces, clear aligners are gentle on the gums and rarely cause any discomfort.

Who Can Use Clear Aligners?

Invisible teeth brace for adults are removable and require high standards of hygiene. That’s why they are recommended for adults and teens. Also, because of their design, clear aligners are recommended for people with minor and moderate orthodontic problems. Severe malocclusion and bite problems require other forms of treatment. Our dentist in Athens, GA, will first examine your dental health to determine if invisible teeth braces are ideal for you.

How Do They Work?

Most of the clear aligners brands follow a similar treatment process and the procedure begins at the dental office. There are, however, other brands that only require you to send a mold of your teeth from your house.

The treatment process is done in phases:

    • Phase one: Mapping and assessment

Before the invisible aligners are fabricated, the dentist will perform a comprehensive dental. The purpose of the examination is to check the severity of the malocclusion and the condition of the jaw. The dentist will use a 3D digital scan to get a precise image of the teeth and jaw. This scan is used to create the set of aligners that you’ll need.

You will be able to see a preview of the expected results after the treatment is done. Dental software is used to determine the pressure needed to correct the teeth position and the time required. The scans will be sent to the lab for fabrication. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to check the fit of the aligners.

    • Phase two: Commencement of the treatment process

You will receive a series of aligners every two weeks. These plastic braces can only move the teeth slightly and that is why you need multiple aligners that can help achieve the desired position.

For effective treatment, you are required to wear each set of aligners for 22 hours daily for 14 days. You are to remove the aligners when you are eating, drinking, or brushing.

    • Phase three: Retention phase

After the treatment is done, Dr. Brent Nail, DMD will give you a customized retainer device. The primary purpose of the retainer is to protect the teeth and keep them from reverting. The retainer devices are to be worn at night.

How Long Does the Treatment Last?

The duration of the treatment will depend on the severity of the malocclusion and bite problem and the brand used. Some brands require you to wear the braces for 22 hours a day while others need a shorter period. This affects the overall duration of the treatment, but on average you can wear the braces for 18 to 24 months.

Are There Any Dental Instructions?

Yes. As mentioned, invisible braces need high standards of oral hygiene. Here are some tips:

  • Remove the aligners when you are eating or drinking. These aligners do not affect your eating habits but take them off when doing so. The only beverage you can take when wearing the braces is water.
  • Rinse the braces with lukewarm water before putting them back.
  • Brush your teeth and gums daily and before wearing the braces.
  • Store the aligners in a denture clear to keep them moist
